If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost. That is where they should be. Now put foundations under them. — Henry David Thoreau The plan that follows can only be fully appreciated by first understanding why a “Phase Two” is necessary to complete the World Trade Center recovery. What follows is a constructive critique — not destructive criticism. Any plan that claims it would vastly improve this iconic site — by building upon what is already there — deserves to be examined. We appreciate the devotion that so many put into the site we see today, but if it was limited by the trauma and fierce politics of those early years and really could be a far greater tribute to the past and inspiration for the future, we doubt that anyone would stand in the way… There are four reasons why the World Trade Center rebuilding project does not yet live up to its solemn purpose: The first reason is because it is not uplifting. The second reason is because it is not patriotic. The third reason is because it is not respectful. The fourth reason is because it is not the result of a democratic process. |
